Harry Redknapp plays down Newcastle United rumours, backs Steve McClaren

Harry Redknapp plays down speculation that he could replace under-fire Steve McClaren at Newcastle United.

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has distanced himself from speculation linking him with the Newcastle United job.

Under-fire Steve McClaren is said to be on borrowed time at St James' Park as the Magpies sit two points shy of safety and 19th in the Premier League table.

Redknapp, who has been out of the job since quitting Queens Park Rangers in February, has been linked, but the veteran says that McClaren - who worked under him at Loftus Road - will turn things around.

The 68-year-old tweeted: "Not heard anything about Newcastle. They've got a great manager in Steve. I've worked with him, he's excellent. I'm sure he'll get it right."

United, who were thumped 5-1 by Crystal Palace last week, host in-form Liverpool on Sunday.
