Former Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd is adamant that Joe Kinnear must offer an apology to the club's supporters following an outburst in a radio interview.

Former Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd believes that the club's director of football Joe Kinnear must apologise to the Magpies' supporters.

Kinnear was confirmed in his role at St James' Park earlier today but criticised the club's supporters and pronounced the names of several players incorrectly in a radio interview.

Sheppard told the Daily Star: "He has insulted the club, the fans and the directors too by getting Derek Llambias's name and title wrong.

"I feel he has to issue a heartfelt apology and even then a lot of Geordies will find it hard to forgive him."

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has reportedly asked Kinnear to tone down his outbursts in the media.
