Michael van Praag withdraws from FIFA presidency race

Michael van Praag withdraws from the race to become next FIFA president, leaving Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein and Luis Figo as the sole challengers to oust Sepp Blatter.

Dutchman Michael van Praag has withdrawn from the race to become next FIFA president.

The 67-year-old was one of three challengers to oust Sepp Blatter at the top table of football's world governing body, alongside Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein and Luis Figo.

However, speculation first surfaced on Wednesday afternoon suggesting that the president of the Dutch FA was considering stepping down from his bid in an attempt to pool unified support behind one candidate.

These reports have now been confirmed, leaving Figo and Al Hussein as the sole challengers to Blatter, although it has also been suggested that Figo himself may opt to step aside in the coming days.

The presidential election takes place on May 29, with Blatter aiming to secure a fifth term as FIFA president.
