FIFA suspends Nigerian Football Federation

FIFA's emergency committee announces that the Nigerian Football Federation has been suspended because of government interference.

The FIFA Emergency Committee has suspended the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with immediate effect because of government interference.

The suspension means that the Nigerian national team and all Nigerian clubs cannot currently play in international competitions.

In a statement, FIFA referenced article 13, paragraph 1 and article 17, paragraph 1 of the FIFA statutes, which state that member associations must not be influenced by third parties.

The Nigerian government served the NFF with court proceedings that instructed them to allow the Nigerian Minister of Sports to appoint a senior member of the civil service to take over the running of the Nigeria Football Federation. FIFA will not lift the suspension until the order is withdrawn.

The most immediate Nigerian team that could be affected is the women's Under-20 side, who are due to take part in the upcoming August World Cup.

FIFA said that if the court actions have not been withdrawn by July 15, then the team will not be able to compete in Canada.
