Late penalty hands Bristol City all three points

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas scores a penalty in stoppage time to hand Bristol City all three points from their trip to Notts County.

A stoppage-time penalty from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas secured a 2-1 victory for Bristol City away at Notts County this afternoon.

Visiting City made most of the early running, but it was the home side that broke the deadlock in the 13th minute.

There was confusion in the City defence, which allowed Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Zeli Ismail to burst into the penalty area, before going on to squeeze his shot beyond the reach of Frank Fielding.

City continued to carve out opportunities as the half progressed, but they were unable to pull themselves level before the break. The closest they came saw midfielder Luke Freeman strike the outside of the post with a curling effort from distance.

However, with 60 minutes played, the away side did score the equaliser. Mark Little's low cross was missed by debutant Kieran Agard, but Aaron Wilbraham was on hand to tap the ball into an empty net.

Both teams created chances to claim all three points in the closing stages, but it appeared that the match was going to end in a draw until Freeman was brought down inside the area and Emmanuel-Thomas stepped up to beat Roy Carroll with the resultant penalty in the sixth minute of injury time.
