Craig Brown backs Stuart McCall appointment at Rangers

Former Scotland boss Craig Brown believes that Rangers will get the next best option to legendary manager Walter Smith by appointing Stuart McCall until the end of the season.

Former Scotland manager Craig Brown has claimed that Rangers will get the next best thing to their legendary manager Walter Smith by bringing in Stuart McCall to take charge until the end of the season.

McCall, who played for the Gers between 1991 and 1998, has reportedly been appointed by the Scottish Championship club for the remainder of the campaign.

Brown, who worked with McCall during his playing and coaching career, believes that the 50-year-old is a good alternative to Smith.

"I said some time ago that I felt Rangers should beg for Walter to return," he told The Herald. "If the board cannot get Walter, and I wouldn't imagine he would have wanted to go back, they have got the next best thing.

"Stuart has a history with Rangers, he has done well here as a manager and he has the personality required to get the place lifted. It could turn out to be an inspired appointment and I hope that is the way it works out.

"He is available, he knows the Scottish game and he is well-respected at the club thanks to his past achievements as a player."

McCall has been working as assistant to current Scotland boss Gordon Strachan.
