Ally McCoist: 'Rangers unlikely to challenge for Scottish Premiership title'

Rangers legend Ally McCoist says that his former club are still "two or three" years away from challenging for the Scottish Premiership title.

Ally McCoist has said that he does not expect his former club Rangers to be challenging for the Scottish Premiership title for another "two to three" years.

The Ibrox legend helped Rangers secure back-to-back promotions to the Scottish Championship after financial difficulties had resulted in their demotion down the league pyramid, but despite the club's return to the top flight, McCoist feels that Old Firm rivals Celtic will prove too strong by the end of the campaign.

The 53-year-old is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "The building process is still quietly in operation. I think it is still going to be two or three years.

"I was never of the opinion that Rangers were going to come in and set the place on fire and win the league by some considerable distance. What we are seeing from Rangers at this moment is what I expected it to be.

"There will be games where things don't go their way. Obviously the standard of opposition is better than it has been in the last few years, so they are finding their feet."

Rangers currently sit in second place in the league standings ahead of their first showdown of the season with Glasgow rivals Celtic this weekend.
