Florentino Perez: 'Real Madrid will not play in United States'

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez "outright rejects" plans to play a regular-season La Liga game in the United States.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has insisted that the club will not play a regular-season La Liga game in the United States.

The governing body of the Spanish top flight has agreed to play one game per season in the USA as part of a 15-year deal with media company Relevent, which arranges the pre-season International Champions Cup tournament.

However, the Spanish FA and Spanish Footballers' Union have spoken out against the plan, and now Perez has announced that Madrid will "reject" any attempts to make them move one of their matches.

"We won't go to the United States," Perez said in a statement.

"I don't know whose interest it is in to play there but it is not in the interests of the clubs or the supporters, so we outright reject it."

Barcelona and Girona have already requested to move their January meeting to Miami.
