Mick McCarthy backs Martin O'Neill for Republic of Ireland job

Mick McCarthy believes that Martin O'Neill will become the next manager of the Republic of Ireland.

Former Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy has expressed his belief that Martin O'Neill will be the next man to take up the role.

The Football Association of Ireland have reportedly made former Sunderland boss O'Neill their main candidate to replace Giovanni Trapattoni.

Ipswich Town boss McCarthy, who managed Ireland between 1996 and 2002, has said that O'Neill would be a good choice.

"Martin has the job as far as I am aware. Absolutely nailed on, shoo-in for it," McCarthy told BBC Sport.

"He is out of work and he is a good manager. So it is my understanding he has the job - so good luck to him."

O'Neill has been out of work since leaving Sunderland in March.
