Mario Gomez fires Fiorentina past Roma

Mario Gomez scores twice as Fiorentina beat Roma 2-0 to reach the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia.

Mario Gomez scored twice as Fiorentina booked their place in the Coppa Italia semi-finals by beating Roma 2-0 this evening.

Radja Nainggolan had the first attempt on goal with a half-volley that was watched all the way by Ciprian Tatarusanu.

They threatened again moments later when Alessandro Florenzi latched on to Nainggolan's clever ball over the top and sent his effort just over the bar.

Roma were creating all of the best chances and Adem Ljajic came close with a low effort that deflected just wide of the post.

On the half-hour mark Nainggolan almost saw his powerful strike deflect into the net off Ashley Cole, but Tatarusanu palmed the ball clear.

Fiorentina rarely posed a threat in the opening half, with their best chance coming just before the break, when Gomez headed a corner wide at the front post.

The Viola showed more attacking intent after the interval and they came close to breaking the deadlock when Alessandro Diamanti's shot whistled inches wide of the post.

Vincenzo Montella's side continued to grow into the game and they took the lead in the 65th minute when Gomez touched Manuel Pasqual's cross into the far corner.

Roma were stunned and they were almost caught out again when Josip Ilicic scooped a shot onto the bar, but he was adjudged to have been standing in an offside position.

The visitors continued to pose a threat and they made sure of their place in the last four with a minute left to play, as Gomez was found once more by Pasqual before turning and rifling a powerful strike into the roof of the net.

Fiorentina were then able to see out the rest of the game against a dejected Roma side, as they set up a semi-final clash against Juventus.
