Late Dele Alli strike earns MK Dons victory over Sheffield United

MK Dons leave it late to snatch the three points in their League One clash against Sheffield United as Dele Alli fires an 87th-minute winner.

Dele Alli scored an 87th-minute winner to fire the MK Dons to a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United in their League One clash this evening.

The home side had a decent chance to put David Martin under pressure in the MK Dons' goal as Chris Basham gathered a loose ball on the edge of the area, but his shot was tame and straight at the keeper.

The Blades tried to press forward and looked threatening with Jamal Campbell-Ryce down the right flank, and his low cross into the area took a deflection off a defender and bounced towards goal, but Martin was on hand to make the stop.

United were the better side in the final third, but weren't able to test Martin as Paddy McCarthy rose highest in the penalty area from a corner from Campbell-Ryce, but he couldn't guide his header on target from close range.

In the second half, Sheffield pressed forward with better intent as Jamie Murphy teed up Stefan Scougall on the edge of the area and his low shot almost found the bottom corner, but Martin was on hand to make the stop.

The Blades should have taken the lead when Basham latched on to Campbell-Ryce's cross into the box, but he could only guide his effort past the post.

United finally thought they had gone ahead when substitute Marc McNulty put the ball into the net from close range, but he saw his strike chalked off by the officials for offside.

MK Dons had a chance to snatch a winner late on when Antony Kay was brought down just outside the box by Jay McEveley. Danny Green's free kick was saved by Mark Howard, but after a scramble in the box Alli fired the ball home.

The Blades had time to put the visitors under late pressure as Green was sent off for his second bookable offence, but they couldn't make their advantage count as Karl Robinson's side held out for the victory.
