Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk on way to Southampton?

Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk is expected to join Southampton before the transfer deadline, according to reports

Southampton are expected to sign Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk before the transfer window closes, according to reports.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to the South Coast club all summer and according to Sky Sports News, the transfer should go through today for a fee in the region of £11.5m.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman has been looking to strengthen his defensive options this season, having seen Toby Alderweireld turn down a permanent transfer in order to sign for Tottenham Hotspur.

Van Dijk had doubts about his future in Scotland after Celtic's defeat to Malmo in the Champions League qualifying stages and with the Hoops signing Tyler Blackett from Manchester United on loan as cover, Van Dijk may be allowed to leave the club.

The former Groningen man made 58 appearances for the Scottish champions last season in all competitions, scoring 10 goals.
