Jan Vertonghen to miss start of season with ankle ligament damage?

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen could miss the start of the season as he is reportedly ruled out for three to four weeks with an ankle injury.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is reportedly likely to miss the start of the Premier League season with ankle ligament damage.

The North London club were awaiting the results of a scan today after the 26-year-old fell awkwardly on a sodden pitch during Tottenham's 3-1 defeat to Sunderland in the Asia Trophy.

Following the scan, Vertonghen has been faced with the prospect of being on the sidelines for three to four weeks, meaning that he could miss Tottenham's opener against Crystal Palace on August 18, according to the Daily Mail.

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas partly blamed the pitch's conditions at the Hong Kong Stadium for Vertonghen's injury.
