Tottenham Hotspur playmaker James Maddison is reportedly set to undergo a scan on a potential knee injury after a scare in Sunday's North London derby draw with Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotspur playmaker James Maddison is reportedly set to undergo a scan on a potential knee injury after a scare in Sunday's North London derby draw with Arsenal.

The Lilywhites ended a three-game Premier League losing run at the Emirates, coming from behind twice to leave with a share of the spoils after a pulsating affair.

Cristian Romero's own goal and Bukayo Saka's penalty propelled the Gunners into the lead on two occasions but Spurs captain Son Heung-min struck back with two goals of his own - both of which were set up by Maddison.

The former Leicester City man capitalised on a lapse in concentration from Jorginho barely two minutes after Saka netted from the spot, robbing the Italian of the ball in midfield and playing Son through to calmly find the far corner.

However, later on in the second half, the England international hyperextended his leg in the turf when challenging Jorginho for the ball, and he immediately went down clutching his knee in agony.

The manner of Maddison's nauseating fall led to fears that the midfielder could have sustained a serious problem, but he was able to carry on for a short while before ultimately being withdrawn late on.

Maddison played down his problem when speaking to Sky Sports News towards the end of the game, though, saying: "I had a little moment when I tackled Jorginho where I jolted my knee a little bit.

"You do not want to ever be playing in a derby where you are not at 100 per cent because it can cost the team, so I had to come off for the last little period."

Nevertheless, the Evening Standard reports that Tottenham will send the 26-year-old for scans later this week to hopefully rule out a severe injury, but he did not require an ice pack or crutches when he left the stadium.

Maddison could not prevent Leicester's demotion to the Championship last season, but he has hit the ground running at Tottenham with two goals and four assists from six Premier League matches.

The midfielder won the Premier League Player of the Month prize for August owing to his impressive summer exploits, while Ange Postecoglou also took home the Manager of the Month accolade, having led Spurs to their best start to a season in 58 years.

Maddison was one of two Tottenham casualties from Sunday's four-goal derby draw, as Brennan Johnson - who was making his full Tottenham debut - came off just after the hour mark with a hamstring problem.

The former Nottingham Forest man will also be assessed later this week, but Spurs are set to be sweating over the fitness of both players before next weekend's blockbuster battle with Liverpool.

The Lilywhites recently lost Ivan Perisic to a devastating ACL injury, which could mark the end of his Tottenham career, while Ryan Sessegnon, Giovani Lo Celso, Rodrigo Bentancur, Bryan Gil and Alfie Whiteman are all recovering from surgery.

There was a bit of good news for the Tottenham faithful on Monday, though, as the club confirmed that they have agreed a deal to sign 16-year-old Hajduk Split defender Luka Vuskovic when he turns 18 in 2025.
