Tottenham Hotspur reportedly agree a deal in principle to sign Nottingham Forest attacker Brennan Johnson for £45m.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly reached an agreement in principle to sign Nottingham Forest attacker Brennan Johnson.

The Wales international had been earmarked as the Lilywhites' prime deadline day target as they seek to reinforce their offensive ranks following Harry Kane's move to Bayern Munich.

Chelsea and Brentford were previously tipped to battle Tottenham for the signature of Johnson, but the Tricky Trees' £50m valuation put Spurs' London rivals off.

Questioned on Johnson's future earlier in the week, Forest boss Steve Cooper insisted that no official negotiations were ongoing, telling reporters: "If something's going to happen then it's coming to that time.

"We shall see. In terms of Brennan there's no official news, we just have to carry on as normal. The boys are in for training and we'll treat it as best we can like a normal day."

However, Tottenham have not given up hope of negotiating a deal to bring Johnson to North London, and according to the Daily Mail, an agreement is now in place.

The report claims that Spurs - who had previously had a £40m approach rebuffed - will pay £45m to sign the 22-year-old, and the two clubs are now locked in talks over bonus payments.

Johnson is supposedly gearing up to travel down to London for a medical before Friday's 11pm deadline, although Spurs are still hoping to shift some unwanted players before closing a deal.

The Lilywhites are expected to sanction Japhet Tanganga's loan move to Augsburg, while Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Tanguy Ndombele are not in Ange Postecoglou's plans either.

Meanwhile, Fulham are pushing to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as a replacement for Bayern Munich-bound Joao Palhinha, but the Dane is believed to have reservations over a move to Craven Cottage.

However, barring any further hitches, Johnson will become Spurs' seventh signing of the summer window after James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Alejo Veliz, Guglielmo Vicario, Ashley Phillips and Manor Solomon.

The Welsh attacker joined the Forest academy in 2009 and has risen through the youth ranks to make 109 appearances for the senior team, scoring 29 goals and setting up 12 more.

Johnson helped keep the Tricky Trees afloat in the top flight last term with eight goals and three assists from 38 appearances, while he has already made four appearances for Cooper's side this season.

Spurs are also believed to be working on a late move for Conor Gallagher in the final hours of the transfer window, although a move for the Englishman will hinge on Hojbjerg's future.

Tottenham return to action in the Premier League away to newly-promoted Burnley on Saturday afternoon.
