Fabio Borini: 'Sunderland move fuelled by Euro 2016 ambition'

Fabio Borini reveals that his return to Sunderland was motivated by ambitions of featuring for Italy at Euro 2016.

Fabio Borini has said that he rejoined Sunderland from Liverpool in an attempt to revive his ambitions of playing for Italy at next summer's European Championships.

The 24-year-old scored 10 goals in 40 games for the Black Cats in 2013-14, as well as helping them to the League Cup final. He rejoined the club to secure first-team football after an unsuccessful season back at Anfield last campaign.

The former Chelsea striker has one senior cap for his country but is confident that a good season back at the Stadium of Light can propel him into Antonio Conte's plans ahead of next summer after a unhappy spell at Liverpool.

"My target is to achieve the Euros next year, and playing for Sunderland regularly I think that I can," Borini told BBC Sport.

"It has been frustrating [at Liverpool], I can tell you that, and I was bringing [that frustration] it home and it was not nice to be upset. I was not even on the bench when there were not strikers available. We need players in Italy to play every week."

Borini is in line to make his second Sunderland debut when the Premier League's bottom side host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
