Sunderland to make short-term managerial appointment?

Sunderland are tempted to make a 'firefighter appointment' by bringing in a new manager on a short-term basis in time for next week's visit of Millwall, a report claims.

Sunderland are reportedly hopeful of bringing a new manager on board prior to next week's meeting with Millwall, even if it means making a short-term appointment.

The Black Cats have been on the lookout for a new boss since parting company with Simon Grayson eight days ago, 16 minutes after a 3-3 draw against Bolton Wanderers.

Chief executive Martin Bain is said to have put together a list of possible candidates to take charge at the Stadium of Light, with further discussions to take place over the next few days.

According to the Sunderland Echo, Bain is open to handing the job to someone on a short-term basis as he wants a new man in place before Millwall visit on November 18.

Paul Hurst and Nathan Jones of Shrewsbury Town and Luton Town are the latest names to be linked, but Sunderland are understood to be after a higher-profile manager.
