Report: Reading move for Sunderland's David Vaughan

Welsh international midfielder David Vaughan is reportedly the subject of a £1m bid from Championship outfit Reading after being told he can leave Sunderland.

Relegated Reading have reportedly lodged a £1m bid for out-of-favour Sunderland midfielder David Vaughan.

The 30-year-old has been told he can leave the Stadium of Light, with manager Paolo Di Canio determined to put his own stamp on the Black Cats squad.

Newly-promoted duo Hull City and Crystal Palace are also thought to be interested in the Welshman, but the Daily Mail reports that the Royals have made the first move.

Nigel Adkins's side are targeting an immediate return to the Premier League and have thus been ambitious in the transfer market, with internationals Wayne Bridge and Royston Drenthe among the summer recruits.

The same source claims that Reading are willing to match or better the wages offered by Hull and Palace, and hope that will be enough to tempt Vaughan to drop down a division.
