Wales above England in FIFA rankings for first time ever

Wales climb ahead of England in the FIFA rankings to become the top British team for the first time in their history.

Wales have moved ahead of England in the FIFA standings for the first time in their history to become the highest-ranked British team.

Last month Chris Coleman's side moved up to ninth and their standing hasn't changed in the latest update, but England have swapped places with Chile either side of Wales and dropped to 10th.

It is only the second time England have not been the top British outfit, with Scotland briefly going above them 20 years ago.

Wales's rise has been largely due to their performance in Euro 2016 qualifying. They lead Group B and world number two outfit Belgium by three points after edging out the Red Devils 1-0 in their last qualifier.

They will strengthen their position at the top of the group and move a step closer to qualifying for the European Championship finals for the first time ever if they beat Cyprus tonight.

The other home nations, Scotland and Northern Ireland, are also on course to qualify for the finals of Euro 2016 and lie 31st and 41st respectively in the FIFA rankings.

The top five of the standings remains the same, with Argentina leading the way ahead of Belgium, Germany, Colombia and Brazil.
