Pepe Mel: 'I must work hard to earn respect'

West Bromwich Albion head coach Pepe Mel admits that he will have to work hard to earn respect as he continues to search for his first win in English football.

West Bromwich Albion head coach Pepe Mel has admitted that he wants to prove himself to people during his first spell in England.

Mel has arrived at The Hawthorns for his first attempt at managing a club outside of his native Spain, and after a difficult start to his tenure, the former Real Betis boss is keen to make an impact in the Premier League.

The 51-year-old told the Birmingham Mail: "The public have been very kind towards me but I haven't proved anything yet. It's down to me to prove myself to people.

"I knew that it wasn't going to be easy with the situation with Nicolas Anelka, the injuries and the results, coupled with this being a new country for me with a new language and new culture.

"But I want all of the pressure to fall on me rather than the players. I have been in similar situations before in Spain and the only way to get out of them is by working hard."

Mel has yet to win in seven matches in charge of the Baggies.
