Roberto Martinez believes that his players have the ability to avoid relegation, but urges them to have more self-belief.

Roberto Martinez has told his Wigan Athletic players that they must 'remove the handbrake' if they want to stay up this season.

The Latics have won just three league games in 24 attempts this campaign, but the Spaniard feels that his squad have the quality to beat the drop and that their problems are largely psychological.

Ahead of Wigan's trip to Bolton Wanderers, Martinez said: "The mental side sometimes puts a handbrake on your performance at this stage of the season.

"In every season we've had to overcome that. I feel like we've got rhythm back, we know exactly what we have to do.

"As a squad we couldn't have better experience than we've had in the last campaign. It's very fresh in everyone.

"In many ways we have to look back on that experience to help us through the next 14 games."

Martinez has never beaten Bolton in seven attempts.
