Howard Webb named as World Cup referee

Premier League referee Howard Webb is named as a match official for the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

Premier League referee Howard Webb has been named as a match official for the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

The 42-year-old has been given the position following his stint at the tournament in 2010, where he officiated in the final between the Netherlands and Spain in South Africa.

According to AP, Webb will be joined by assistants Michael Mullarkey and Darren Cann for the duration of the global event.

Webb faced criticism for his performance in the 2010 final after he sent off Johnny Heitinga, issued 14 yellow cards and failed to punish Nigel de Jong following a chest-high tackle on Xabi Alonso.
