The son of Aston Martin team owner Lawrence Stroll has confessed that "everyone" in his father's role is keen to secure a deal with the esteemed Adrian Newey.
As the Formula 1 world moved to Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix, speculation intensified this week that Newey, considered the most distinguished designer in the history of F1, was recently shown around Aston Martin's new headquarters in Silverstone.
These rumors also indicate that while Newey has a generous proposal from Ferrari, he has communicated to Aston Martin his willingness to consider a $30 million annual contract.
Amidst these circulating speculations, Fernando Alonso acknowledged his interest in collaborating with the 65-year-old engineer but cautioned against being swayed by the rumors.
"It's coming from the same source and the same websites of one week ago that he was in Ferrari and there would be an announcement at 12 o'clock before the race in Canada," Alonso said with a grin. "So yeah - rumors are rumors."
Lance Stroll, Lawrence's son and a team driver, also acknowledged hearing these speculations.
"Mainly from the media, yeah," the Canadian noted.
"Last week they said he was going to Ferrari, now he's coming on board with us, next week they'll say he's going to Williams," Stroll said, smiling.
"He's certainly a legend, he has more world titles than anyone else in the paddock, and everyone loves Adrian and wants to sign him."
When queried about why Newey might opt for Aston Martin, the 25-year-old driver mentioned, "We have an exciting factory, a young team, and an exciting project to offer. We have the new wind tunnel and all the new facilities that certainly make our team an attractive option."
Team principal Mike Krack also commented on the Newey rumors at the Barcelona event, saying, "When we see how many names have been associated with our project in recent times, it honors the vision of Lawrence. I think it gives credibility to the project," the German added.
"Maybe a few years ago, if we had linked these names to our team, no one would have taken it seriously. So I think we're flattered by that."
