Fernando Alonso: Missing Formula 1 season opener will be "tough"

Fernando Alonso understands the recommendations of doctors to sit out the season-opening grand prix in Australia, having suffered concussion in testing last month.

McLaren's Fernando Alonso has admitted that missing the opening race of the Formula 1 season is "tough" to take.

The Spaniard has been ruled out of this month's Australian Grand Prix after suffering concussion during pre-season testing in Barcelona on February 22.

Alonso says that he fully understands the decision made by doctors, and the 33-year-old is already looking ahead to the Malaysian Grand Prix which follows soon after.

"It will be tough not to be in Australia, but I understand the recommendations," he posted on Twitter. "A second impact in less than 21 days 'NO' #countdownMalaysia."

Kevin Magnussen will now take his teammate's seat for the Albert Park event.
