Rory McIlroy: 'Darren Clarke is the perfect fit for Ryder Cup captaincy'

Rory McIlroy believes that Darren Clarke is the "perfect fit" to captain Europe at the Ryder Cup in 2016.

Rory McIlroy has reiterated his desire to see Darren Clarke captain Europe at the next Ryder Cup in 2016.

Clarke became the favourite to lead the team just days after Paul McGinley guided Europe to victory at Gleneagles in September, and McIlroy admits that he hopes the job is given to his fellow Northern Irishman, who is believed to be facing competition from Miguel Angel Jimenez.

"I'm going to be a little biased. Darren is a good friend of mine and from Northern Ireland, so it would be great to see him get the captaincy," the world number one told reporters.

"But if it was to be Miguel, then I'd have no problems with that either. They are going to have a tough decision.

"I always thought Darren would be a perfect fit for the captaincy in the States. People love him over there and he'll do well but people love Miguel anywhere he goes and the more he plays on the Champions Tour, he's going to become more popular as well."

Europe are looking for their fourth successive win when the USA hosts the event at Hazeltine next year.
