Rory McIlroy says that he wants to keep his position at the top of the rankings after reclaiming number one status at the weekend.

Rory McIlroy has admitted that he wants to stay as the world's number one golfer for the long-term.

The Northern Irishman reclaimed the top of the rankings from British pro Luke Donald after a play-off defeat to Rickie Fowler in the Wells Fargo Championship yesterday.

"I want to try and play well for the next few weeks and try and solidify my spot there at No. 1 and hopefully start by doing that next week and giving myself another chance to win," said McIlroy.

The 23-year-old failed to clinch victory at Quail Hollow and finished on a score of 70, while Fowler won the contest with 69 and D.A. Points secured 71.
