Rickie Fowler has admitted that it "hurts" to have missed out on winning the US PGA Championship title, but has congratulated Rory McIlroy on his triumph.
Fowler was part of a four-strong battle in the final round of the tournament at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky, but finished tied third, two shots behind winner McIlroy.
The Northern Irishman secured his fourth major title by finishing one shot clear of Phil Mickelson.
Fowler wrote on Twitter: "Really felt like I could win it today...this one hurts...I'll be able to look back and learn a lot from the majors this year #patience.
"Congrats to @McIlroyRory on some great golf as of late...let's keep having fun with it!
"Looking back...petty cool to join @TigerWoods and @jacknicklaus as the only three to have finished top 5 in all 4 majors in the same year👍."
The American pro also received a tweet from McIlroy, who praised his opponent by claiming that he will not have to wait long to win a major title.
.@McIlroyRory thanks man...many more battles for sure...at tourneys and home in Jup...enjoy the week off!
