Jo Edwards makes light work of England's Natalie Melmore to take gold

Jo Edwards defeats Natalie Melmore to win gold in the women's lawn bowls singles at the Commonwealth Games.

New Zealand's Jo Edwards has brushed aside Natalie Melmore of England 21-15 in the final of the women's lawn bowls singles event to take gold.

Melmore, who had defeated South Africa's Colleen Piketh earlier in the day to secure her spot in the final, was unable to overcome Edwards in what was at times a one-sided final.

The Delhi 2010 gold medallist added a silver medal to her collection after succumbing to a 21-15 defeat at the Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre.

Melmore made a slow start to the contest and found herself 7-0 behind in the third end. Things progressively got worse for the Team England competitor, and Edwards eventually opened up a 13-1 lead over her opponent.

That scoreline soon turned into an 18-6 lead, but Melmore pounced when Edwards was unable to kill the game off, bringing the game to 18-12 at one stage. The New Zealand competitor used all her experience to cross the finish line, however, to take the match 20-15.

Meanwhile, Piketh bounced back from her semi-final disappointment to record victory against Northern Ireland's Catherine McMillen in the bronze-medal shootout.
