Newfangled put down after injury at York

Highly-rated racehorse Newfangled is put down after suffering a serious hip injury in the Lowther Stakes at York on Thursday.

Much-fancied racehorse Newfangled has been put down after suffering a hip injury at York on Thursday.

The filly, who was owned by Princess Haya of Jordan, broke down in the Lowther Stakes and was found to have suffered serious damage to her pelvis.

Equine specialist Gary Witheford, who had assisted with Newfangled since she had been taken to the vets on Thursday night, tweeted: "Sad to report Newfangled was put down today as her pelvis wasn't going to heal sufficiently."

The John Gosden-trained horse had been installed as the ante-post favourite for the 1,000 Guineas next year.
