Philip Lucas: 'Commonwealth Games are once-in-a-lifetime experience'

Barbados rugby sevens captain Philip Lucas is enjoying his Commonwealth Games experience despite his side being soundly beaten on the field.

Barbados rugby sevens captain Philip Lucas has said that he is enjoying the "once-in-a-lifetime experience" of representing his country at the Commonwealth Games.

Lucas saw his side heavily beaten by Canada, Scotland and New Zealand at Ibrox Stadium this afternoon as the minnows struggled to cope with being drawn in a very competitive group.

Despite finishing bottom of Pool A, however, Barbados will be in action on day two as they face the Cook Islands in the quarter-finals of the bowl, and Lucas is looking forward to extending his Games experience.

"It is brilliant. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I know all of the boys are having a fantastic time, and now we're just looking forward to tomorrow to see if we can do well in the second round of the tournament," he told Sports Mole.

Barbados were a late addition to the tournament after Nigeria pulled out, but Lucas insists that their preparation was not affected by the delayed call-up.

"We're building up to the Pan American Games, so we were already training in Barbados and in the UK. It was fine. We were all fit and ready to go anyway so we were happy to get the call-up," he added.

Barbados conceded 183 points in their three outings on the opening day.
