Jermey Guscott: Jonny Wilkinson a "rugby immortal"

Jeremy Guscott brands Jonny Wilkinson a "rugby immortal" following his retirement from England duties earlier today.

Former England centre Jeremy Guscott believes that Jonny Wilkinson will go down in history as a "rugby immortal" following his retirement from international rugby.

Wilkinson made the announcement earlier today (Monday) to step down from his England duties, but he will continue his club career with Toulon in France.

Guscott is the latest in a long line of England greats to praise the fly-half, who was a World Cup winner under Sir Clive Woodward in 2003.

"The guy was world class, the best in his position at that time, and when he dropped that goal to win the World Cup for England he became a rugby immortal," Guscott told BBC Sport.

"Every side that played against England knew that if you conceded a penalty you were looking at three points - that gave England an edge.

"He is one of the best goal kickers ever."

Wilkinson retires as the nation's all-time leading points scorer, having amassed 1,179 points in 91 caps for his country.
