Commonwealth gold medallist Leiston Pickett has admitted that she expected Jamaica's Alia Atkinson to clinch victory in the 50m breaststroke final in Glasgow this evening.
Atkinson was the favourite to take the top spot on the podium after breaking two records in the heats and semi-finals, but Pickett edged to victory 0.8 of a second ahead of her Jamaican competitor.
When asked if she expected to win the gold, Pickett told reporters: "No, definitely not. [Not after] seeing how quick Alia went in that semi, but one of the biggest things I've learnt is that it doesn't matter what time people go in the semis, it's really the race that it comes down to, so that's all I kept thinking the last 24 hours."
Australia currently top the medal table with 18, while Scotland have five and England sit with 11 medals after two days.
