Juan Martin del Potro recovers to advance in Australian Open first round

Juan Martin del Potro fights back from a set down to advance into the second round of the Australian Open.

Juan Martin del Potro came back from a slow start to book his place in the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.

The fifth seed dropped the first set, but rallied to beat United States qualifier Rhyne Williams 6-7 6-3 6-4 6-4 in the first round of the tournament at Melbourne Park.

Del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion, made numerous unforced errors as he surrendered the first-set tiebreaker, but cleaned up his game in the second set and took control for the remainder of the three-hour battle.

The Argentine, who is coming off the back of earning his 18th career title at the Sydney International last week, hadn't lost to a player ranked as low as No. 130-ranked Williams since Tokyo in 2009, when he fell to No. 189 Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
