Angelique Kerber has progressed to the semi-finals of the WTA Paris Open after a 6-4 6-4 victory over Maria Sharapova today.
Sharapova, the number one seed for the tournament, went down 6-4 in a closely contested first set in which both players showed their quality.
The former world number one hit back in the second set, however, getting an early break to put Kerber under pressure.
The number nine seed responded well, breaking back and taking the game to Sharapova.
Kerber got her first match point soon after, and it was all she needed as she completed the upset in an hour and a half.
