Heather Watson beats world number 27 Varvara Lepchenko in straight sets to reach round two of the Aegon International at Eastbourne.

Heather Watson has beaten world number 27 Varvara Lepchenko in the first round of the Aegon International at Eastbourne.

The British number two earned a 6-3 6-4 victory over her American opponent on Monday afternoon.

Watson, 21, will now face Russian world number 36 Elena Vesnina in the second round of the Wimbledon warm-up event.

Vesnina progressed with a 2-6 6-4 6-3 triumph over former French Open champion Ana Ivanovic.
