Sara Errani beats Varvara Lepchenko 7-5 6-3 to book her place in the Madrid Open quarter-finals.

Sara Errani has booked her place in the Madrid Open quarter-finals with a straight-sets victory over American Varvara Lepchenko.

Lepchenko moved into a 3-0 lead during the opening set before the Italian world number seven broke three times to claim it 7-5.

Both players struggled to hold serve during the second, but Errani dug deep to close out the contest 6-3.

The former French Open finalist will now face Russian world number 24 Ekaterina Makarova in the next round.
