Rajeev Ram shocks Fabio Fognini

Rajeev Ram defeats Fabio Fognini in straight sets to book his place in the second round of the US Open.

Rajeev Ram has coasted past 16th seed Fabio Fognini and into the second round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

The Italian - a two-time winner on the ATP Tour this year - offered little resistance as the 29-year-old steamrollered his way to a 6-1 6-2 6-2 victory.

The American was 5-0 up before Fognini got a game on the board in the first set, but a recovery never looked on the cards over the next two sets.

His misery was brought to an end in 84 minutes on court 17, meaning that Ram will play the winner of Jurgen Zopp and Marcel Granollers for a place in the third round.
