Report: Kansas City Chiefs to offer Alex Smith new contract

Quarterback Alex Smith is to be the subject of a new contract offer from the Kansas City Chiefs, according to reports.

The Kansas City Chiefs are to offer quarterback Alex Smith an extension to his current contract, according to a report.

Smith has one year remaining on the deal which he signed in 2012 after leaving the San Francisco 49ers. His contract is worth just $7.5m (£4.6m) - a very low sum compared to other quarterbacks of his experience and skill set.

Both NFL.com and the National Football Post reported the Chiefs' plans on Wednesday, with both sites stating that Jay Cutler's new multi-million deal with the Chicago Bears, announced last week, are springing them into action in fear of losing Smith.

The 29-year-old threw for 378 yards and four touchdowns during last Saturday's playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
