Former Missouri Tigers defensive end Michael Sam wore a rainbow "Stand with Sam" message on his kit during the NFL scouting combine at the weekend.
Sam made history by publicly coming out during a television interview earlier this month, meaning that he would become the first ever openly gay player in the NFL should he be drafted.
The 24-year-old revealed that he was given the message at a basketball game, where he received a standing ovation in his first public appearance since his announcement.
"I hope all you guys stand with Sam ... please do. I went to a basketball game against Tennessee, a very kind lady gave it to me. I gave her a hug, I got a lot of support out there," Sam told reporters.
Sam has been projected as a mid-round pick in this year's Draft.
