Sol Campbell: 'Arsenal can't compete with big spenders'

Sol Campbell says that Arsenal cannot "compete" with the big spenders in the Premier League after parting with just £11m this summer.

Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell has claimed that the club cannot "compete" with the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City in terms of their spending power.

Arsene Wenger's only recruit this summer was goalkeeper Petr Cech from Chelsea, while United and City spent more than £100m each on new arrivals.

United's spending included the signings of Bastian Schweinsteiger and teenager Anthony Martial, whom they bought for £36m from Monaco on deadline day.

City, who have won the Premier League twice in the last four years, added numerous talent, including Raheem Sterling, Nicolas Otamendi and Kevin De Bruyne.

"You can't compete with them," FourFourTwo quotes Campbell as saying. "Man United had to spend money and it's not worth talking about Man City because they're in a different type of galaxy.

"Doesn't always bring you success though. The trouble with Arsenal is they've just got to get everyone fit. That's the trouble already - there's a few players out and we haven't got that depth."

Arsenal were linked with a late swoop for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, but the club reportedly pulled out of a deal at the last minute.
