Transfer window outlay reaches record-breaking £870m

Premier League spending for the calendar year passes the £1bn mark for the first time.

The 2015-16 summer transfer window has proven the richest in Premier League history, with spending topping £870m.

The figure, a 4% increase on last season, sees outlay among England's top-flight clubs pass the £1bn mark for the calendar year for the first time.

Manchester City were the biggest spenders this summer, shelling out £55m for Kevin De Bruyne from Wolfsburg and £49m on Raheem Sterling from Liverpool.

Manchester United also broke a record by making Anthony Martial the most expensive teenager in football history, snapping him up in a £36m deal.

Italy's Serie A was the second-highest spending league in Europe with gross spends of £405m, followed by La Liga on £400m, the Bundesliga on £290m, and Ligue 1 on £220m.
