Report: Javier Mascherano to revert to midfield role

A report claims that Javier Mascherano will remain with Barcelona after new boss Luis Enrique informed the Argentine that he will be deployed in midfield next season.

Javier Mascherano will reportedly remain with Barcelona this summer after new boss Luis Enrique informed the Argentine that he will be deployed in midfield next season.

The 29-year-old arrived at the Camp Nou from Liverpool in 2010 as a defensive midfielder, but has spent almost all of his Barca career at centre-back.

It had been claimed that the former River Plate youngster would seek pastures new this summer in a bid to re-establish himself in the middle of the park.

However, according to Mundo Deportivo, Enrique has promised the experienced midfielder a run in his normal position during the 2014-15 campaign.

The futures of the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas, however, remain unclear.
