Liverpool and Fenway Sports Group deny reports that the club is up for sale.

Liverpool have moved quickly to deny rumours that the club has been put up for sale by the Fenway Sports Group.

Fenway, lead by Reds owner John W Henry, took over the Merseysiders in 2010 but have yet to witness the team obtain Champions League football, as they stuttered to a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League last season.

Rumours in the media suggested that the club could be purchased for £350m and had attracted interest from Saudi Arabian oil firm Saudi Aramco, but both Liverpool and Fenway have quashed the speculation.

"Fenway Sports Group has made its position clear, Liverpool Football Club is not for sale. There is no truth in this story," said a club spokesman.

A spokesperson for Fenway Sports Group said: "Like so many rumours in the past about a sale of Liverpool Football Club, there is absolutely no truth in this.

"We have had no meetings with anyone about a sale, we don't know who the source of the rumour is."

Fenway purchased Liverpool from fellow Americans George Gillett and Tom Hicks in October 2010.
