John Aldridge: 'Jamie Carragher should carry on'

Ex-Liverpool forward John Aldridge believes that Jamie Carragher should sign a new contract and extend his stay at Anfield beyond the end of the season.

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has insisted that Jamie Carragher has more to give at Anfield and should extend his career beyond the end of the season.

Carragher is out of contract in the summer, with Reds boss Brendan Rodgers revealing last weekend that talks have begun over his future.

Aldridge thinks that Carragher showed in the 2-1 win at Mansfield on Sunday that he still has a lot to offer as an experienced defender in a youthful Liverpool squad.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "Jamie was excellent at Mansfield, he marshalled the backline really well and was our best defender.

"Carra is out of contract in the summer and is considering his options. Brendan Rodgers wants him to sign another deal and I'd love to see him keep playing for another year.

"He never lets us down and definitely still has the ability to perform at the top level. Just having him around the place is a massive plus. When the time comes and he does hang up his boots, I really hope he's given a coaching role. Carra epitomises everything which is best about the club."

The 35-year-old has been a regular feature under Rodgers this season, making 21 appearances in all competitions.
