Liverpool's Georginio Wijnaldum plays down Barcelona speculation

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum plays down reports linking him with a move to Barcelona and a reunion with former Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has poured cold water over speculation linking him with a move to Barcelona.

With less than a year left to run on the midfielder's contract at Anfield, Barcelona was touted as Wijnaldum's possible next destination, where he would have linked up with former national team manager Ronald Koeman.

However, Wijnaldum has since dismissed rumours linking him with a switch to Camp Nou, although the Netherlands international is also remaining tight-lipped over his future.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, the 29-year-old said: "I don't think it was that serious, otherwise you would have read a bit more, or more would have happened.

"There was nothing precise. The way it looks now, I will stay in Liverpool. My contract is valid for another 10 months and that can change. You never know in football. We will see what happens."

Wijnaldum has played every minute of Premier League football for Liverpool thus far during the 2020-21 campaign, and the former Newcastle United man is now on duty with the Netherlands, who take on Mexico in a friendly before Nations League clashes with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy.
