Southampton vs. Manchester United: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash between Southampton and Man Utd, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Manchester United travel to St Mary's to face newly-promoted Southampton in their fourth Premier League fixture of the 2024-25 campaign on Saturday lunchtime.

The Red Devils have collected just three points from their opening three top-flight matches and entered the international break following a disappointing 3-0 home defeat to rivals Liverpool.

Southampton, meanwhile, are one of only two teams along with basement club Everton who are yet to pick up a single point this term as they have suffered defeat in each of their first three games against Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Brentford, losing 3-1 to the latter last time out.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 133
Southampton wins: 28
Draws: 37
Man Utd wins: 68

Southampton and Man United have faced each other a total of 133 times across all competitions, with the Red Devils comfortably leading the head-to-head record having posted 68 wins to the Saints' 28, while there have also been 37 draws between these two teams.

Just over 127 years have passed since these two clubs faced off for the very first time back in August 1897, when Southampton played out a 1-1 draw with Man United (known back then as Newton Heath) in the FA Cup second round.

Newton Heath won the reverse fixture 2-1 at Bank Street, before Southampton claimed their first win over the Red Devils in March 1923 by the same scoreline in a Division Two clash at Old Trafford.

In the Premier League era (since 1992-93), Man United have faced the Southampton 48 times, winning 29, drawing seven and losing 12, while they also boast an impressive record in cup competitions during this period, winning all five meetings across the FA Cup and EFL Cup by an aggregate score of 14-3.

The only time that these two teams have faced off in a final was in February 2017 when Jose Mourinho's Man United beat Claude Puel's Southampton 3-2 in an entertaining EFL Cup showpiece at Wembley Stadium, where Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice including an 87th-minute winner.

In the 21st century, Southampton have only beaten Man United four times in 37 meetings across all tournaments. Their last victory against the Red Devils was in January 2016 when Charlie Austin scored the only goal in a surprise 1-0 Premier League victory at Old Trafford.

Since then, the Saints have failed to beat the Red Devils in any of their last 15 encounters, losing seven and drawing eight. Man United's secured the joint-biggest win in Premier League history over Southampton when they demolished the Saints 9-0 on home soil in February 2021.

Three of the last four meetings since have ended all square, though, including a goalless stalemate at Old Trafford in their most recent encounter in March 2023.
