Preston North End midfielder Paul Gallagher has been hit with a three-match ban for a clash with Stoke City's Joe Allen on Saturday.
The incident in the first half of the 2-2 draw went unpunished by referee Andrew Madley, but the Football Association has now acted retrospectively using video evidence.
Gallagher struck Allen with his elbow just after the half-hour mark, leaving the Wales international with a cut to the nose.
With no action coming from Madley, the 34-year-old went on to open the scoring from the penalty spot shortly after the incident.
Gallagher has since accepted a charge of violent conduct and will miss the Championship games against Norwich City and Derby County, as well as the EFL League Cup tie at Leeds United.
The veteran will be available again when Bolton Wanderers visit Deepdale on September 1.
