Johnston: 'Cancer spreading through Rangers'

Former Rangers chairman Alistair Johnston says that a 'cancer is spreading through the club' as the battle for control of the Scottish Third Division side continues.

Former Rangers chairman Alistair Johnston has said that a 'cancer is spreading through the club' as the battle for control of the Scottish Third Division side continues.

The Rangers board of directors have confirmed that they will call a general meeting of shareholders aimed at removing current chairman Malcolm Murray.

Johnston, who left the club in 2011, has admitted that he is concerned that the club's off-field problems will continue to affect success on the field.

"There is a cancer spreading throughout the club and it's not going away," he told The Scotsman.

"My concern is that until self-serving investors are eliminated then the club can't go forward.

"I don't know the people involved but I really wonder about their agenda. I really wonder in whose best interests are they working."

Due to their current financial situation, Rangers have a transfer embargo until September 1.
