St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright not interested in records

Saints are eight matches unbeaten.

St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright insists putting points on the board means more to him than writing his name into another chapter in the club’s history books.

The Perth outfit can equal their club record unbeaten run of nine games in the top flight if they avoid defeat to Motherwell at McDiarmid Park on Saturday.

It is an accomplishment Saints have achieved three times previously and Wright can join previous bosses Tommy Muirhead, Bobby Brown and John McClelland in achieving the feat if they avoid a slip-up against Stephen Robinson’s men.

But the Northern Irishman says the possibility of setting a new benchmark has not even been mentioned as he stressed his only focus is ensuring his high-flying side maintain their impressive start to the campaign.

He told the club’s official website: “It hasn’t been in our thoughts at all. I don’t want to belittle records but it doesn’t really mean anything. What matters is where we finish up at the end of the season.

“Of course we want to keep the run going but the unbeaten record isn’t something that’s been mentioned.

“Our focus is on a tricky Motherwell side and ensuring that we maintain our performance levels. If we do that then I know we can get a positive result.”

Saints kicked off their current run by snatching a 1-0 triumph over Well at Fir Park with a stoppage-time Jason Kerr winner.

And Wright is expecting another tight encounter this weekend.

“They’re a good team,” he said. “They might not have had the best of starts but they are still a good side.

“We saw that in the match at Fir Park which was close and they’ve taken points off both Rangers and Celtic this season.

“They finished seventh last season and got to two cup finals. This year they’ve struggled to find that consistency and haven’t been able to get a run going but they have good quality in their squad.

“In this league there’s always a bit of familiarity with the teams you come up against so we know what to expect from Motherwell.

“They play at a high tempo and like to get the ball forward as quickly as possible. They ask questions of you and get balls into the box. We’re prepared for that and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
