Demarai Gray helps Birmingham City to Wolverhampton Wanderers win

Wolverhampton Wanderers suffer a blow in their promotion push as they lose 2-1 to Birmingham City.

Demarai Gray scored the winner as Birmingham City beat in-form Wolverhampton Wanderers at St Andrews this afternoon.

Gray scored a fine solo goal as he ran from the halfway line, held off a couple of challenges and fired the ball into the bottom corner to earn his side victory in the Midlands derby.

Earlier in the game, the visitors took the lead midway through the first half as Nouha Dicko squared the ball for Benik Afobe to slide it in from eight yards out.

However, Birmingham equalised two minutes later as Rob Kiernan bundled David Cotterill's corner over the line from close range.

Both sides created early opportunities in the match as Diego Fabbrini went close with an audacious chip from the edge of the box for Birmingham, and Wolves' James Henry had a shot deflected behind for a corner.

Robert Tesche went close to scoring a spectacular second for the home side a few minutes later, but his shot from a tight angle on the right hand side fell the wrong side of the post, before Dicko stung the palms of Darren Randolph with a low drive.

Wolves finished the first half on top, and they almost went ahead as Kevin McDonald curled a shot just wide of the far post.

After the break, Birmingham continued to create chances as Gray forced Carl Ikeme into a low save at the near post. However, it didn't take the youngster much longer to find the net as he scored in the 61st minute.

Wolves pushed forward in search of an equaliser, and almost found one in the 85th minute but McDonald sliced the ball over the bar from close range.
